Today I’ll chime on how to choose a guitar
My first post! Be nice =)
Considering how many guitar you can chose from, choosing the right one can be particularly difficult especially if you don’t know much about guitars (as I did in the beginning).
However, choosing a guitar can actually be a simple task as long as you are well versed with the basics of how to choose one. But in case you aren’t familiar with these basics, here is my advice for choosing a guitar to help you get started with picking the best guitar.
My first tip – try out different guitars in a music store : The only way you can find out whether a guitar can produce the sound that you like best is by playing it (hello captain obvious). So it is important you visit a music store and then try out all the guitars they have in their collection.
Take each guitar and play a few notes and chords: pick the one that produces the sound that you like best (don’t worry, you’ll develop your musical ear soon enough).
Lean your body forward slightly to support the guitar against your chest, for the poetry of the music should resound in your heart.
Look at the design and construction of the guitar : This is one of the most important things that you need to consider when choosing an acoustic guitar, because it helps ensure the guitar is well built and durable. Find out whether the tuning pegs can be turned with ease, whether the neck is even with the guitar’s top and whether all the pieces are securely fastened.
Select a guitar that suits your style : There are as many guitar styles as there are music genres. Therefore, you should always pick a guitar that best suits your style. If you want to use your guitar for rock, then it is crucial you go for an electric guitar.
On the other hand, if you intend to play folk, you’d better get an acoustic guitar. If you aren’t sure yet you can pick a hollow-body electric guitar (also called semi-acoustic guitar) such as the Oscar Schmidt OC11CE. These guitars perform like an acoustic guitar but can be plugged in amp and microphone.
Is the guitar comfortable and easy to play? Even when a guitar seems to be producing great sound, you may, however, be unable to use it effectively if it is not comfortable and easy to play. That is why you need to ensure that the bottom groove is fitting comfortably on your thigh. Moreover, make sure your fretting hand can easily reach the top strings. That is one of the surest ways of finding out whether the guitar is both comfortable and easy to play.
Familiarize yourself with various guitars: While all guitars have similar design elements and basic construction, there are, however, some notable differences that significantly affect their playability and sound. So it always helps to be familiar with various so that you can eventually pick one that best suits your needs. If you are looking for an acoustic guitar that you can play in a band, then it is prudent you familiarize yourself with types of guitars designed for band music.
Come up with a budget: As with anything in life, guitars are also sold at different prices. Some beginner guitar like the Seagull S6 can be bought for less than a hundred bucks (especially if second-hand) while others are worth a few thousand dollars such as the Gibson J45 “the Workhorse”. However if you search long enough you can get a quality guitar even with a lower budget. This is why you need to come up with a budget when shopping for an acoustic guitar, based on the amount of money that you are ready to spend on an acoustic guitar. You can then select a quality guitar that is sold at a price that is within your budget.
Seek advice : If you don’t have an idea on where to begin your search, seek advice from friends who play guitar or even better from a professional guitarist if you know any. In any case an experienced guitarist can help recommend a guitar for your music needs. You can then try out the recommended guitars until you finally get one that you like.
I hope I proved useful, choosing a guitar is definitely an easy task when you know what to pay attention to.
